PPS Franklin High School_main

Portland Public Schools, Franklin High School

Greenbusch provided Acoustical Design for the $88M modernization of the historic Franklin High School, originally built in 1915. The 2017 modernization (143,000 SF renovation; 144,000 SF new) retains the period aesthetic for the portions of the building considered historically significant and upgrades building systems replacing with contemporary, energy efficient systems.

The firm’s contribution to the design includes: 1) Recommendations for sound isolation between spaces; 2) Reverberation control; 3) Background sound levels associated with the mechanical systems; 4) Construction methods for roof and wall separation (from exterior noise sources such as road traffic, airplane, as well as from interior/adjacent spaces); and 5) Interior finishes.

Spaces of note include: library, music and choir rooms, new 500-seat theater, Black Box theater, dance room and music rooms, among others. The historic auditorium was transformed into a new media center with classrooms.
